Le Bas Boulay is a traditional longère with the English
owners living with their children and friendly dog in the
farmhouse, and the apartments at the opposite end of this
very long building. It is a wonderful place to relax and
unwind whilst drinking in the clear air, stunning views
and listening to the sounds of nature. The garden is gradually
being developed but you have areas where you can sit, eat,
read, sunbathe etc.

Our nearest shops are in the village of Carrouges which
is about 5 minutes drive away. Although small, it has two
bakers, two small supermarkets, butcher, delicatessen, post
office, newsagent, chemist, various bars and restaurants
providing traditional French cuisine, Normandy crepes as
well as pizzas. There is an imposing château at Carrouges
dating from the 14th and 16th centuries. This is open to
the public and hosts a hunting and fishing festival every
August. Market day is Wednesday morning. (5+ minutes by
car from Le Bas Boulay)
Alençon is our nearest larger town with its outstandingly
rich architectural heritage, its claim to fame being needlepoint
lace making.

|
The river Sarthe runs through the town and in the pedestrianised
centre you will find the mediaeval charm of the old town,
the Dukes Château, the Town Hall, the Church of Notre-Dame
with its majestic Gothic flamboyant porch and its magnificent
series of stained glass windows, as well as the Cornmarket.
Alençon hosts a large number of shops, boutiques, restaurants,
a hospital and train station.

|
|
|
|
Commercial centres are on the outskirts of town where you
will find hypermarkets and other large stores. A swimming
pool, ten-pin bowling alley and ice rink (1/10 – 30/04)
can also be found. Alençon has markets on Thursday
and Saturday mornings. (15+ minutes by car from Le Bas Boulay.
It is a beautiful area in which to walk, cycle, motorcycle,
horse ride, play golf and go fishing.

|
As well as local amenities and attractions, Le Bas boulay
is the ideal base to explore the dramatic scenery of Suisse
Normande, the D-Day landing beaches and the famous Bayeux
Tapestry. Mont St. Michel and Paris are approximately two
hours drive away. Just over two hours and you can visit
Monet's garden at Giverny.
