Argèles-sur-Mer is well placed for
you to explore French towns along the Vermillion coast inland.
There is a scenic coastal road that takes you through Collioure,
Port Vendre and Banyuls sur Mer
to the Spanish border. St Cyprien and Canet
sur Mer are nearby resorts that have sandy beaches
that are gently sloping and hence safe for paddling.
Inland you will find ancient and fortified towns such as
Prat de Mollo, Villefranche de Conflent and about 140 km
distant Carcassonne (photo below right).
Spa towns in the mountains such as Vernet le Bain are a
pleasant destination when the heat is beating down.
For those interested in art there are well known museums
at Ceret (modern art) and Figueras
(Dali) in Spain.
The tax free principality of Andorra is
about three hours by car and Barcelona
(photo of the port area below left) is about 120 miles by
motorway or rail (190 km.)
Coach trips set off to many tourist destinations from Argeles
seafront if you do not wish to drive or you can hop on a
train from Argeles. There are many picturesque Spanish Costa
Brava resorts within a couple of hours by car -
Tamariu has a sandy beach and rocky cliffs around a sheltered
bay. Empuria brava has a complex of canals
with swanky boats cruising up and down. Nearby Ampuries
there are Roman remains. All around there are wine tours
and vineyards and the area is a well known wine producing
area. Specially noted is the local fortified wine Banyuls.
At the border crossing of Jonquera, you
can stock up with wine from the barrel or spirits at rock
bottom prices.
