30 kms from Sisteron, on the borders
of the Drôme and Alpes de Haute Provence, Montfroc is a small
village surrounded by stunning countryside, with historic towns and
villges, alive with fêtes and festivals during the summer months,
close by.
With a population of 60, there’s
a real sense of French country life as it used to be. Life
is unhurried, peaceful, away from the stresses of 21st Century media
hype, while, of course, profiting from all the usual modern amenities!
Two double bedrooms, an open plan living room/kitchen, sunny patio
and shady terrace. |

Our Provençal cottage is situated in the small village of Montfroc,
shown in the photo right, on the borders of the departments of the
Drôme and the Alpes de Haute Provence.
It is 30 km from Sisteron (photograph below left) with its magnificent
fortress that received Napoleon on his return from the island of Elba,
and the King of Poland was imprisoned here.
|
|
| |
|
|
The fortress offers daily visits. During the summer months
it holds a 'Son et Lumiere' and a classical music festival.
Sisteron has a superb "plan d'eau" with parking,
all of which is free.
There are restaurants, cafes and shops, a cinema and each
Saturday there is a Provençal market.
The fortress at Sisteron is shown in the photograph below
right.

On
the route to Sisteron there are numerous villages holding
festivals all through the summer, for example 'la fête
des agnelles', where local produce is sold; olive oil, garlic,
knives, jewellery, soaps, bread, lavender, honey, etc.
In the opposite direction is Séderon (photo below
left), 13 km from Montfroc, where there is an open-air swimming
pool with a small restaurant, and tennis courts. Séderon
also has a supermarket, bakers, and a butcher who sells
the famous Sisteron lamb. There is a beer festival during
the summer.

of Montfroc and surrounding countryside |

The small village next to Montfroc is Les Omergues. Here
you find a cafe/restaurant where each Friday you can eat
an 'aioli' on the covered terrace.
In June the 'Feu de Saint Jean' takes place on the 25th
and the 'fete des Omergues' takes place on the 5th to the
8th August.
In the surrounding region there are lavender festivals
(at Sault and Digne) and a harvest festival (Revest Ie Bion).

The beautiful village of Simian la Rotonde is worth visiting
for its round tower (la Rotonde) and its abbey, the grounds
of which have been turned into a garden centre which sells
some of the most beautiful roses. There are some wonderful
walks to be taken on the Montagne de Lure just to the south
and the impressive Mont Ventoux is close by . 5 minutes away,
the gite of 'Les Ricoux' in Les Anieres (a hamlet which is
part of Montfroc) has stables (photo right) where you can
hire horses for exploring the area in another fashion, and
buy their exceptional goats cheese and preserves.

|
And last, but not least, during the months of June and July,
there is the lavender - fields and fields of this wonderful
flower which perfumes the entire region and turns it into
a natural patchwork of colour. There is so much to see in
this beautiful region, with its aromas of lavender, thyme,
sariette, marjoram and lime trees, that it is impossible
to note everything. A much better idea is to come and discover
all there is to see and do yourself - it is an opportunity
you shouldn't miss!
